January 26, 1980 - September 5, 2021
LeFleur, Jennifer Michelle, 41 Beloved daughter, granddaughter, niece, and cousin passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021 at the Suncoast Hospice North Pinellas Care Center in Palm Harbor, Florida from complications resulting from head trauma that occurred in an automobile accident in 2004. She is survived by her parents, Greg and Marcia LeFleur of Palm Harbor, her grandfather, Charles Retchless of Dunedin, Florida, and several cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is also survived by the love of her life, Shawn Sherman, of Tampa, Florida. Jennifer was born on January 26, 1980 in Dunedin, Florida. She graduated from East Lake High School in 1998 and The University of South Florida in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. Her love of journalism became a passion after attending a writer’s camp in 1996 at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies. She was a frequent contributor to her high school newspaper, The Talon, and continued as a correspondent to the University of South Florida’s newspaper, The Oracle. Upon graduation, she became a freelance writer for the New Tampa Times and a media assistant for the Home Shopping Network. Her life changed forever on April 18, 2004, when her car was struck by a careless driver speeding through a red light. After months of care at Tampa General Hospital and HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center, it was clear she would require skilled nursing care for the remainder of her life. Through sheer determination, she successfully relearned many skills such as eating, while also transitioning to a wheel chair for mobility. She resided at a nearby skilled nursing facility so her parents could remain active in her life. Greg and his mother, Mabel LeFleur, were steadfast about daily visits and hands-on oversight of Jen while Marcia handled the never-ending administrative demands of her guardianship. Months turned into years … seventeen in total. While Jennifer’s quality of life would never be what she may have envisioned, she shared in holidays and family events facilitated by a wheelchair van that gave her some independence. The head injury damaged her short-term memory but her long term memory and recognition of family and friends was intact. She could even play a mean game of Scrabble in the earlier years. Life again changed forever when COVID 19 came to town. She contracted the virus in July, 2020, which led to a host of medical conditions with limited paths to improvement. She accepted this with the incredible grace and humility that she had demonstrated throughout her short life. She will be forever remembered for her kind spirit, compassion for others, and sweet, non-judgmental personality. May she rest in peace until her loved ones see her again. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations and contributions be made to Suncoast Hospice at https://suncoasthospicefoundation.org/ways-to-give/. Jennifer's Celebration of Life, which will take place at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens on Friday, September 24th, at 3:00pm, will be available to view via live stream beginning at 2:45pm at https://www.oneroomstreaming.com/.
