    Abraham Savitzky

    October 20, 1920 - December 11, 2021

Abraham Savitzky, 101, of Largo, FL passed away on December 11, 2021. A cherished husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather, Abe was a very kind, gentle, wise and generous man. He had an outstanding and defining sense of positivity, optimism, adaptability and abundant joy. A man of many interests and passions, Abe exuberantly enjoyed opera, music, theater, art, science, engineering, bridge, ballroom dancing, swimming, travel and above all an absolute devotion to his family. Born in Manhattan, NY to immigrant Ukrainian Jewish parents Clara and Isaac Savitzky, Abe grew up in the Bronx ‘Coops’, a progressive co-op community he loved, with trees and gardens, across the street from Bronx Park. There he made life-long friends, joined the science club and was happily a DJ playing records for parties and dances. He graduated from Stuyvesant High, a school of accelerated sciences and academics. Trained by his uncle as an apprentice tool and die maker, he subsequently founded New York based R.S. Precision Industries, still in business today. Meeting at Camp Unity, a camp for progressive adults, Abe fell in love with Edith Grossman, a bright, witty, trained opera singer with a beautiful voice. They wed on May 20, 1945. Abe served in the army during WWll, initially as a tool and die maker at the U.S. Army Base at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, an internationally acknowledged hub for the advancement of armament technologies and engineering innovation. He was later transferred overseas to help transport soldiers and war brides home to the US. A loving and devoted husband for 56 years to Edith Grossman Savitzky until her death in 2001, a cherished companion to Sylvia Katzman until her death in 2014, he is survived by his daughter Judy Roth (Jay) of Palm Harbor, FL, his son Bob Savitzky (Lily) of Plainview, NY, his grandchildren Greg Travis (Helly), Diana Savitzky Moss (Adam), Amanda Savitzky and Steven Savitzky, great granddaughters Sienna and Cali Moss and his beloved sweetheart Lisl Schick. A truly lovely and good man, we are so grateful for his love, care and guidance. He will live forever in our hearts. For any who wish, donations may be made in his memory to The Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Or to help with the situation in Ukraine, consider donating to JewishGulfCoast.org, jdc.org/Ukraine, wck.org, or any of your choosing
